Your Board Should Be Opening Doors — Not Just Filling Seats
By: Akira C. Wesley
Let’s get straight to it.
Everybody wants to start a nonprofit… but nobody wants to talk about what it actually takes to sustain one.
You can’t even apply for most funding without a board. Yet somehow, folks rush to fill those seats with whoever is closest—family members, friends, people who “support the vision” but bring zero strategy to the table.
Let me say it plainly:
That’s not a board. That’s a liability.
🚫 Stop Building “Comfort Boards”
Using your unqualified cousin, your disengaged auntie, or your kids who don’t understand governance is not strategy—it’s avoidance.
It feels good because it’s easy. But easy does not build sustainable organizations.
When you build a board based on comfort, you’re signaling:
You don’t value expertise
You don’t understand governance
You think your organization can survive off vibes and grants
And that’s where the real problem starts.
💰 FACT: Grants Are NOT Your Lifeline
Let’s clear this up right now:
Grants are supplemental. NOT sustainable.
Yes—grants are important. Yes—they can fund programming.
But what they don’t do well is:
Cover your full operational costs
Build long-term financial stability
Create unrestricted revenue
So, when your entire board is sitting around waiting on the next grant cycle?
You’ve already lost.
🚪 Your Board Should Be Opening Doors
A strong board does not just “exist” for compliance.
They:
Bring in funding (individual giving, corporate sponsorships, partnerships)
Open access to networks you don’t have
Advocate for your mission in rooms you’re not in
Strengthen your credibility
If your board cannot help generate revenue or relationships…
They are occupying space, not building impact.
🧠 Build a Board with INTENTION
You need a strategic mix of people who bring:
✔️ Fundraising experience
✔️ Financial oversight (think CPA, finance professionals)
✔️ Legal knowledge
✔️ Programmatic expertise
✔️ Community influence
✔️ Entry-level professionals who can grow and contribute
Not everyone has to be seasoned—but everyone must be useful.
And let’s be clear:“Passion” without skill will drain your organization.
⚖️ Governance = Accountability (Yes, Even for YOU)
Founder & CEO—this part is for you:
You are not a lone ranger.
Once you establish a board, you are accountable to it.
That means:
You don’t get to make every decision unchecked
You don’t get to surround yourself with “yes people”
You don’t get to operate without transparency
A real board will:
Challenge you
Hold you accountable
Push the organization forward
And if that makes you uncomfortable?
You’re not ready to lead at this level yet.
🧱 Build It Right EARLY
Most organizations try to fix their board when things are already falling apart.
That’s backwards.
You build strong governance at the beginning, so:
Your infrastructure is solid
Your funding strategy is diversified
Your leadership is supported (and challenged)
Your organization can outlive you
Because let’s talk legacy for a second…
👑 Your Organization Might Outgrow You
Everybody wants to build something that lasts.
But here’s the truth:
At some point, your organization may need leadership beyond you—or your family.
If your board is built on loyalty instead of competency, your organization will not survive that transition.
Strong boards protect the mission—not your ego.
🔥 HERE ARE THE FACTS
A weak board will break your organization
Grants alone will not sustain you
Family ≠ qualification
Governance requires accountability
Fundraising is EVERYONE’S responsibility
Strategy > comfort
Legacy requires structure
🎯 Final Word
If your board isn’t opening doors…
They’re closing opportunities. Cause WHET!?
Build wisely. Lead boldly. And stop playing nonprofit with people who aren’t equipped to win.
