May is Mental Health Awareness Month. And every year, people post quotes, wear green, and keep pushing through burnout as if it were a badge of honor.
Let’s be clear: Ignoring your mental health is not strength. It’s neglect.
The Truth Most People Avoid
Mental health is not just about feelings. It impacts:
Your decision-making
Your leadership capacity
Your relationships
Your ability to sustain anything you’re building
You cannot build empires, lead teams, run organizations, or serve communities if your mind is unstable, overwhelmed, or constantly in survival mode.
Unhealed people build unstable systems. That’s FACTS.
High Performers Are Quietly Struggling
Let’s talk about it:
You’re showing up. You’re producing results. You’re “handling it.”
But internally?
You’re exhausted
You’re overstimulated
You’re carrying trauma, pressure, expectations
And nobody sees it because you’ve mastered performance.
Functioning is not the same as being well.
The Cost of Ignoring Your Mental Health
If you don’t deal with it, it will show up anyway:
Burnout that forces you to stop
Poor leadership decisions
Emotional reactivity in professional spaces
Broken relationships
Physical health decline
You don’t avoid the cost. You delay it—and pay it with interest.
Let’s Get Practical (Because We Don’t Do Fluff)
Here’s what taking care of your mental health actually looks like:
1. Boundaries Without Apology
Stop overcommitting. Stop saying yes when your capacity is already maxed out.
2. Accountability for Your Healing
Therapy. Coaching. Faith. Structure. Pick your tools—but do the work.
3. Regulate Before You Respond
Everything doesn’t require an immediate reaction. Emotional discipline is a skill.
4. Rest Is Not Optional
You are not more valuable because you are exhausted.
5. Check Your Environment
Some of you are trying to heal in spaces that are actively harming you.
That’s not resilience. That’s self-sabotage.
For Leaders, Founders, and Change Makers
This is where I’m going to push you.
You want impact? You want funding? You want sustainability?
Then get your mental health in order.
Because:
You cannot lead people well if you’re internally unstable
You cannot build sustainable programs from a place of burnout
You cannot make clear, strategic decisions when your mind is clouded
Infrastructure applies to YOU too.
Your mind is the system. If it’s not solid, nothing you build will last.
Final Word
This month is not about awareness. We are past that.
It’s about action.
Check in with yourself—honestly.Get the support you need—consistently.Do the internal work—intentionally.
Because at the end of the day:
Your mental health will either sustain your life…or quietly destroy everything you’re trying to build.
FACTS. NOT FLUFF.
